Flute Masks with Holes in Them
Can someone above my pay grade explain the Science behind requiring masks with holes in them to play wind instruments?
@JLimHospMD It was happening in my school until masks were removed. School bought special mask with a slit to insert the instrument and the end of the instrument had a filter too.
@JLimHospMD In most woodwinds (such as the saxophone), the air escapes throughout the many keys of the instrument, not just in the bell. It's pretty futile.
@JLimHospMD It’s similar to the science my sons middle school used to have the tuba player put a large pair of pantyhose with the legs hanging down on the end of his instrument.
@JLimHospMD Once you realize it has nothing to do with Heath or health policy it makes perfect sense.
It signals agreement and compliance with the covid orthodoxy.
@JLimHospMD My daughter was forced to make one of these for her flute in Fall 2020- and she didn’t want to make another one- so she used the same one every day until she graduated-
It looked like someone had cleaned a bathroom with it.
But at least it kept her sAFe!!
@JLimHospMD I think its the same science that allows you to sit at a restaurant to eat without a mask, but walking to your seat requires a mask.
@JLimHospMD Professional orchestra musician here. At the beginning of the pandemic, some orchestras made wind/brass players use very fancy m@sks/bell covers/bags. Everyone hated them, & they were all abandoned by 2021, leaving strings/keyboard/percussion bearing the brunt of m@sk use. 1/
@JLimHospMD Yes, stop looking for the answer in epidemiology. You'll find it in the psychology section.
@JLimHospMD Easy: The Science indicates that if NYC and Philadelphia toddlers continue to mask up, musicians can wear masks with large holes in them.
@JLimHospMD It is impossible to explain mask culture. Wearing one below the nose satisfies most people. Wearing one under chin satisfies lots of people. Hanging it off one ear satisfies some people. Holding mask In your hand satisfies some. It’s all a big show
